Current planetary rover localization techniques are lacking in autonomy and accuracy an au- tonomous method of globally localizing a rover is proposed by matching features extracted from a 3d orbital elevation map and rover-based 3d lidar scans localization can be further improved by including odometry. Autonomously based on information about the relative distance, position and velocity of the first vehicle the purpose of this thesis is to find and test methods for vehicle detection and pose estimation the methods are mainly based on 3d point cloud data gathered by a lidar, but infor- mation from cameras are also used.
